Globally $70 billion is lost by the telecommunication sector through fraud, that’s more than the combined GDP of Brunei, Cambodia and Nepal. And this number is of known fraud. The 4th Annual Telecom Fraud and Fraud Risk Prevention helps telecom operators address these risks and reduce fraud within their respective organizations. Fraudsters are getting more creative, and with the increasing popularity of Smartphone’s, avenues such as mobile social networking and mobile payments may lead to a significant increase telecom fraud.
Amit Karir, Head of Risk Management and Privacy, for Uniror in India believes that fraud is a growing problem for telcos in Asia because of their numerous
“Globally, revenue leakage due to fraud would probably be as high as 5 per cent of the total revenues. The tendency for fraud is higher in wireless than in wireline systems. I believe India would more or less fall in line with the international trends. Telecom companies have a high number of external touch points like subscribers, channel partners, content providers and regulators. Simultaneously, they have to deal with acute competition, the demands of rapid growth and consistently maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction. In this context, the industry is subject to a number of fraud risks such as subscriber (documentation) frauds, unauthorized use of its network, leakage of sensitive information, accounting and reporting irregularities, lack of oversight and challenges associated with internal or external misconduct investigations,” he said.
